    Emmaus Team

    Team Meetings:
Liturgy is guided by a Team preparation meeting, currently held monthly.

All community members are invited and encouraged to participate in this meeting. All decisions pertaining to liturgy preparation and community business are made at this meeting. For details on the next scheduled Team meeting, email your request for information.

Minutes of past Team meetings are posted here.

    Preaching and Presiding at Journey-Koinonia:

Regular attendance at Emmaus Team meetings is important for preaching and presiding.

Additionally, preachers, presiders and interested community members are invited and encouraged to participate in an ongoing weekly discussion of Scripture based on the RC lectionary.  Sam Gioia moderates the Google group “journeykerygma.” The discussion is intended to provide additional resources for preachers in their homily preparation, and for presiders.  Please click here to see the Google group description. Click on the “journeykerygma” group title on that page to email your interest in participating to Sam.

    Becoming a Preacher:
Anyone regularly attending Sunday services may become a preacher on an occasional or ongoing regularly-scheduled basis. He or she is invited to attend Emmaus Team meetings to discuss this with others. Community members may elect to preach occasionally by attending specific meetings to prepare and review. Community members are also invited and encouraged to attend meetings regularly to become part of the ongoing preaching rotation.

The current team of preachers includes Lyle Becker, A.C. Caldwell, Patricia Cornman, Carol DeFrancesco, Carol Gabrielli, Sam Gioia, Tom Kinzie, Margie Lachman, Joanne McClarty, Joe O’Donnell, Robin Robbins and Laurie Volk.

    Becoming a Presider:
Anyone who regularly attends Sunday services is invited to attend Emmaus Team preparation meetings on an ongoing basis. Those who wish to serve as a presider may make this desire known at the meetings. A process for discernment and preparation to preside will be designed by the candidate and the team. The preparation process may include preaching but preaching is not required.

The current team of presiders includes A.C. Caldwell, Carol Gabrielli, Sam Gioia, Tom Kinzie, Joe O’Donnell and Laurie Volk.

What Happens at Liturgy Preparation Meetings:

The meetings will proceed from a response to the lectionary readings. All participants will review the readings ahead of time and discuss their questions and insights at the meeting. The preacher(s) will also review commentaries on each reading. The preacher(s) may discuss this research if it pertains to his or her thoughts on the reading. The preacher(s) will discuss the direction of the homily the week before preaching and ask the other participants for any feedback that would be helpful in preparing. The ensuing week the preacher(s) will be asked to evaluate the homily and the preparation process for lessons learned.

In general the content of the homily will address:

    1) the scripture of the day;

    2) the concerns of the assembly; and

    3) the personal response of the homilist.

Homilists are strongly encouraged to interpret scripture as relating to current issues of social justice, such as poverty, housing, hunger and abuses of power.
